Preparation for your Colon Examination
Fleets Phospho-Soda Prep

It is very important that you follow these instructions.  The success of your exam depends on it.

Purchase:  Two 1 ½ ounce (45cc) bottles of Fleets Phospho- Soda Oral Laxative at your local pharmacy. This is an over the counter product.   (There may be a 3 ounce bottle available at some stores.)

The morning  before your procedure:  Begin a clear liquid diet.
Clear Liquid Diet Includes:
Water
Strained fruit juice, apple, white grape and lemonade.
No orange juice.
Clear broth or bouillon.
Coffee without milk or non-dairy products.
Coke, Diet Coke, Pepsi, clear non-red soft drinks.
Tea, Gatorade, Crystal Light, or other similar drinks.
Jell-o, popsicles.
Avoid Red or Purple flavors.
Chewing gum is acceptable.  Hard clear candy is acceptable.

At 4 PM the day prior to your procedure and the day of your clear liquid diet:
1.  Drink chilled 1 ½ ounces of Fleets Phospho-Soda quickly.  (You may drink with a straw to avoid salty taste.)  Follow immediately with 8 to 24 ounces of any clear liquid.
 OR
2.  You may mix the Fleets with a clear liquid per instructions on the box.

Before retiring, drink at least 4 more 8 ounce glasses of clear liquid.  The more liquid you are able to drink, the better your prep will work.

The Day of the Exam:  4 hours before leaving for your exam, drink the remaining 1 ½ ounces of Fleets Phospho-Soda mixed with or followed by 8 ounces of clear liquid.  You may drink up to 2 more 8 ounce glasses of clear liquid within 1 hour.

Important Information for your Colonoscopy

If you become extremely nauseated and begin to vomit after taking the laxative, call your physician’s office and ask to speak with his nurse.  The number is listed at the top of your instruction sheet. If you are able to keep the laxative down for 30 minutes, it will achieve its desired effect.

Two weeks before a procedure, stop taking any herbal products, including Olestra products.  (Olestra is found in no fat chips and snack products.)

One week before your procedure, TAKE NO ASPIRIN.  Read all “over the counter” labels and take no medications that contain aspirin.  Take no Ibuprofren (Advil, Aleve, etc.), no BC orGoody’s Powders, no arthritis medications or anti-inflammatory medications.  Do not take Vitamin E, Iron or multi vitamins.  Your doctor will advise you to stop Plavix or Coumadin 3, 4, or 5 days before the procedure.  All of these medications have a blood thinning effect and could cause unnecessary bleeding. You may take Tylenol.

The morning of the procedure please continue to take:  heart medications, breathingmedications, blood pressure medications or seizure medications with a small amount of water.  If you have any doubt about whether you should take your medications prior to your procedure, simply bring them with you.

If you are diabetic, read and follow the special diabetic instructions.

Please do not consume alcoholic beverages 24 hours before your exam.

It is extremely important that you take all of the laxative as instructed.
The desired effect of the colon prep is to leave the colon very clean.  You can expect the results to be clear, yellow, or light green.

IV Conscious Sedation will be used to help keep you comfortable during the procedure.  You are usually very sleepy but can be easily awakened.  You may not remember the procedure due to its amnesia effect.
