Colonoscopy Preparation

 

                                                                                                           

 

Location:       PIEDMONT HOSPITAL GI LAB

(Circle one) Report directly to the hospital GI Lab in 77 building on _________________ at _____________ am/pm.

Enter at Collier Road entrance. Park in the “North” parking deck. Take elevator to the bridge level (BR). Sign will say “Bridge to Hospital”. Get off at the bridge level.

Walk over the glassed in covered bridge. Turn right and then left. Look for sign to GI Lab. Check in at the window when you enter the GI Lab. You will be registered there.

 

 

DIGESTIVE HEALTHCARE ENDOSCOPY LAB (Our Office)

(Building 95, Suite 4075) Report to the office on __________at __________ am/pm.

Enter at the Collier Road entrance. Park in the “South” parking deck. Take the elevator to the “Orange Level”. Cross over the glassed in covered bridge.

You are now in the 95 building. You do not have to check in at the hospital. Go up to the 4th floor and look for Suite 4075. Sign in at the window.

If someone is sitting at the window, let them know you have arrived.

 



You Need to Buy:

Two 1 1/2 oz. bottles of Fleets Phospha-soda, buffered saline laxative



 

YOU MAY CONTINUE TO TAKE YOUR CELEBREX AND VIOXX UP UNTIL YOUR PROCEDURE.   

                 

2 weeks prior to procedure

If you are on Plavix, get your doctor’s permission to stop taking the drug.

 

1 week prior to Colonoscopy

Discontinue Vitamin E, iron supplements, Aspirin, Ibuprofen, Motrin, Advil, Aleve or arthritis medications.

 

**If you are on Coumadin you must get your doctor’s permission to stop this drug. If we

Remove a polyp; we will let you know when you can start back on it.

 

Three days before your Colonoscopy

Discontinue psyllium products (Metamucil, Fibercon, etc.)

Eliminate roughage from your diet by avoiding fresh fruit, fresh vegetables, popcorn, nuts, seeds and grains such as bran and cracked wheat. You may have cooked fruit/vegetables (no peelings, hulls, seeds, etc.) meat, fish, fowl, juices, dairy products pasta, white rice and low fiber breads.

 

Two days before your Colonoscopy

If you have not already done so, purchase two (2) ½ oz bottles of Fleet Phosphosoda (Ginger Lemon or regular flavor) at any pharmacy. This is non-prescription medication so no prescription is required.

 

The day before your Colonoscopy

Begin a clear liquid diet. You have beverages such as tea, coffee, carbonated drinks, strained fruit juices, Popsicles (no red), jello (no red jell-o), broth or bouillon. No creamed soups or milk products. You may have liquids up until midnight the day before your procedure.

 

The day of the Procedure

You may take your blood pressure medication with a sip of water on the day of your procedure.

 


 

Procedure Preparations

  1. At 8:00 am drink 1 and ½ ounces (3 tablespoons) of Fleet Phosphosoda diluted in ½ glass of water. Follow this immediately with 2 to 3 large glasses of water or fruit juice.

 

  1. At 6:00 pm, Drink another 1 ½ ounces (3 tablespoons) of Fleet Phosphosoda diluted in ½ glass of water. Follow again with 2 to 3 large glasses of water or fruit juice.

 

  1. You may have “Clear Liquids” all day long before your Colonoscopy.

 

  1. Nothing to eat or drink after midnight the night before your procedure.

         If your procedure is scheduled after 12 non the next day

         Stay on “Clear Liquids” all day long the day before your procedure.

     At 7:00pm drink 1 ½ ounces (3 tablespoons) of Fleet Phosphosoda diluted in ½   glass of water. Follow again with 2 to 3 large glasses of water or fruit juice. You    should be having results within 2 – 3 hours.

 

  1. At 6:00 am the morning of the procedure, drink 1 ½ ouches (3 tablespoons) diluted in ½   glass of water. Follow again with 2 to 3 large glasses of water or fruit juice. You may still be having results up to the time of your procedure. This is okay.

 

  1. You must have someone to drive you home after the procedure or it will not be performed. This is for your safety. You may not take a taxi by yourself or ride the bus. You may have a friend/family member pick you up at the 95 building pick up area. If you give us a phone number when you are being admitted, we will be happy to speak with the person driving you home and call them to arrange a time to meet them.

 

  1. If you have any questions or need to cancel, please call 404-355-3200.

  1. Bring a list of your current medications.

 

  1. Leave your car keys and parking ticket with your driver.

 

  1. If you have any special needs, please notify staff prior to your procedure (Interpreter, pacemaker, internal defibrillator, latex allergy).

 

Our center closes at 5 pm. Please have a phone number available to contact your ride to pick you up prior to this time.

 

Wear comfortable clothes to your procedure.

 

       All patients should plan to be with us between 2 – 2 ½ hours.

PLEASE NOTE:

When you receive your statement from this procedure, there will be an invoice for the Doctor’s fee, an invoice for the Endoscopy center (Supplies and Nursing care) and you may receive a separate bill from the Laboratory doctor who examines any tissue that is sent.
